Just a week after Sean Miller’s firing, it appears Athletic Director Dave Heeke and the Arizona Athletic Department have their new head coach.
According to College Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman, Gonzaga assistant coach Tommy Lloyd appears to be the new man that will lead the Wildcat basketball program.
One of Mark Few’s right-hand guys over the last few years in Spokane, many expected Floyd to take Few’s position someday as the next man up whenever Few left Gonzaga. However, it appears the job in Tucson was too much to pass up for the 46-year-old coach.
Over the last 21 seasons, Lloyd has helped build Gonzaga into the national power that it has been over the past two decades, and he’s brought in many high-level international recruits that have been showcased for the Zags.
Some of those recruits include Kelly Olynk, Domantas Sabonis, Ronny Turiaf and Robert Sacre, just to list off a few notable names that have gone on to play in the NBA. Another interesting side note is Lloyd’s son, Liam, who was a freshman guard who played under Bryce Drew at GCU this past season.
Other candidates for the vacancy included many in-house former players, including current Arizona assistant Jason Terry, Pacific head coach Damon Stoudamire, Los Angeles Lakers assistant Miles Simon, and alum Josh Pastner.
