Sande Sez- Postcard from Under the Friday Night Lights

Arizona Sports News online

Greetings from around the valley for week two of Arizona high school football!

First up, Queen Creek taking down Williams Field 37-6. The night belonged to USC Commit Devin Brown and his offensive line. They did a fabulous job of keeping the junior quarterback upright and keeping the running game going. On defense, defensive end Porter Reynolds was a beast. Every time I saw him fly off the line he was in Williams Field’s sophomore quarterback CJ Tiller’s face. While Tiller did have a couple of interceptions, that doesn’t fully paint the entire picture of how athletic this young quarterback is. I expect big things from him once the offensive line can jell and grow.

Next up, color me shocked, Liberty taking down Red Mountain. Liberty bounced back from last week’s 44-10 loss to Chandler and made the correct adjustments. The Lions shut out Red Mountain 30-0.  The Lions lost 40 seniors, which had me a little nervous but faith restored seeing them bounce back. Senior quarterback Brock Mast had a nice end zone throw to connect with Jordon Guevara for a TD that put Liberty up 23- 0 with 10:17 left in the game. Red Mountain shot their own foot with lots of penalties. Something they will want and need to clean up for next week. To Red Mountains credit, they did a great job containing Liberty’s dangerous running back Zaccheus Cooper.

Checking in on the Saguaro Sabercats who had their first game of the season after their first game was canceled due to COVID-19. Saguaro defeated Brophy 27-0. Senior quarterback Xander Werner rushed for two touchdowns and also had 5 receptions. Saguaro is running a two-quarterback system but it was the Sabercat defense that looks to be in prime shape already.

Big shout out to Canyon View high school who got their first win in program history with a victory over Maricopa! Congrats! This calls for a virtual pizza party. I hope they get one.

Phew what a great weekend of high school football. Two weeks are officially in the books and boy oh boy does it feel good!!

Signing off. Next week, I will be coming to you from Gilbert and more.
