Mike Hazen told reporters Tuesday morning the club was preparing for the worst when it came to Steven Souza Jr.’s freak injury the night before. Souza scored in an exhibition game and slipped across home plate, flipping over and leaving him on the ground clutching his knee.

After further testing Tuesday morning, the team said Souza will have season-ending surgery for an ACL tear, LCL tear, partial PCL tear and posterior lateral capsule tear in his left knee.

This will be the second straight season Souza suffered an injury in spring training that will force him to miss significant time. In his first season with the Diamondbacks, he suffered a pectoral strain in spring training that forced him to miss the first portion of the season.

Hazen said the team will plan on having Adam Jones move to right field and have infielder Ketel Marte have a more significant role in center field.
