Three Dots…Tour of Sun Devil Football, Camp T vs Winning Games, “No” on Machado

This and that…

Stunning to me how many people tie Camp Tontozona  directly to the success of the Arizona State football team. Last time I checked, the Sun Devils have strung together a 18-20 record over the last three years. Since the 1997 Rose Bowl team, they’ve lost 115 games. Just because it worked during the Frank Kush era, doesn’t mean that it works now. So for those who are howling(and I’ve heard from plenty of them) that Arizona State is doomed this season because Camp T was scrubbed, i’d say the numbers show that the team bonding narrative hasn’t proven to be true. Bigger fish to fry than Camp Tontozona. Michigan State on National TV is less than two months away. It’s fine if they return to the woods in 2019, but it simply hasn’t proven to make a difference in recent years. Numbers don’t lie…

I went on a tour of the Arizona State football complex at the end of June. It took about an hour to get through the entire place.  There’s a lot to like if you’re being recruited. Barbershop, game room, spacious locker room, etc. In the arms race of college football it’s all very impressive. Will it lead to better results than in recent years in recruiting? No one really knows…

Here’s a few photos I snapped. I’ll put some video up on my instagram this week..,

I  can’t wait for the football season to start. Haven’t felt that way the last few seasons. We haven’t had a preseason Heisman candidate in our State in a  long, long time. Khalil Tate vs BYU on September 1st can’t get here soon enough…

From the “good things happen to good people” file. Kent Somers named sports columnist by the Arizona Republic. Good for him, great for the consumer…

Heard from more than a few in the college coaching circles that freshman Dylan Anderson was putting on a show at the Summer event in Atlanta. The Perry high school big man is playing on a PowerhouseHoops team. Arizona. Arizona State and GCU have already offered him…

Won’t be surprised if the Diamondbacks take a hit in the front office. Jared Porter, who’s working along side of Mike Hazen, is one of the front names for the GM job with the New York Mets. By the way, the Diamondbacks are 28th in the Majors in batting average, but 8th in walks. Yet, here they are in mid-July in contention. Does the lack of batting average make a stronger case to add Manny Machado? No…

A longtime Valley sports broadcaster is going to get back in front of the microphone for a team in the next week or two. Ditto for a former popular player…

Yes, I was surprised Steve Patterson and the Coyotes parted ways. I was with Patterson at Wild Horse Pass when the team made their first round pick. We had a cordial conversation and had agreed to catch up later this summer. Boom, two weeks later his bounced…

Monday at 12:30, we will learn if the Final Four is coming back to Arizona. Phoenix is bidding for 2024, 2025, 2026.

Can’t decide where to go for opening night of the high school football season on August 17th. Perry at Pinnacle, Centennial at Casteel, Chap at Hamilton, Desert Ridge at Red Mountain, or Brophy at Liberty. Strong, strong opening night…
