Shannon Evans II leaned into the microphone Thursday afternoon, when asked if there is respect nationally given to Tra Holder and himself for the job they’ve done to this point in the Sun Devils magical start. “Not really, I was watching ESPN last night and I saw names that popped up under “top point guards in the country”,they had names from everywhere, UNC, Wichita State, Michigan State, Duke, everybody’s point guards and me and Tra(Holder) were nowhere to be found, I was like wow we aren’t even on this list.”
Evans ll is having a terrific season for Arizona State. He’s a big reason why the Sun Devils have gotten off to 12-0 start coming into Saturday night’s game at #17 Arizona. The numbers don’t lie, 17 pts, almost 5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds out of Evans. Holder is leading the team in scoring and shooting almost 47 percent from the field. You would think that with the level of competition Arizona State has faced so far this season(19th in kenpom.com rankings) that the respect would be there but it’s not, and clearly it stings the senior guard.
Opening Up in the Pac
Bobby Hurley hasn’t sensed any change in the players, even with all the national attention and the Arizona game looming. “All I see are guys that are hungry, guys that are highly motivated, guys that are practicing hard and playing unselfish”. It’s so refreshing to be around a coach that doesn’t hype up every last aspect of his team. In a day and age when coaches are coming across as nothing more than salesmen or attempting to be the smartest guy in the room, it’s refreshing to hear someone who’s just focused on coaching hoops without all the nonsense. Hurley spoke with an air of confidence about his teams number 3 ranking. “I feel great about where we are, we have not changed who we are”.
