Stankiewicz Future,New Home for GCU, Barcello to Tucson

GCU Hoops1The Horizon League should be the next landing spot for Grand Canyon University. Valparaiso just left the Horizon for the Missouri Valley Conference so there is an opening.  The ‘Lopes have out-grown the WAC and the West Coast Conference Presidents aren’t going to take in a For-Profit university. The Horizon has Detroit, Cleveland, and Milwaukee as hub cities for schools within the conference, nothing wrong with that, beats Bakersfield, Cedar City and Las Cruces. As to the idea that travel would be a problem, well, I’d kindly point out at that a direct three hour flight would get GCU into the Horizon about the same or quicker than a flight and bus trip.  In a day and age where Universities are struggling with athletic budgets, GCU has to make sure that the Conference they belong to is in great health. Hard for anyone to convince me that the WAC is in that space…

GCU baseball coach Andy Stankiewicz is going to be in demand in the coming weeks. Don’t be surprised if his name is linked to a Pac-12 job. Scouts and baseball people have raved to me about the job he’s done with the ‘Lopes…

So Greg Byrne fired his baseball coach at Alabama. Jay Johnson, get ready for a phone call…

In case you missed it, Justin Toscano wrote a terrific analysis on the sub-500 season at Arizona State and head coach Tracy Smith.

Alex Barcello graduated from Corona Del Sol last week, he moves to Tucson next week

He’s taking a summer session class and then off to Spain in August with the Arizona Wildcat basketball team. Other than that, it’s a slow summer. Bacellos little sisters, Sarah and Amanda, are playing this summer for the Oakland Soldiers on the club circuit. The two are expected to be the starting backcourt at Seton Catholic next season for legendary head coach Karen Self. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Sarah follow her brother to Tucson for college ball…
