Arizona angle in American Pharoah’ Triple Crown win

Bob Baffert is as much an iconic sporting figure in Arizona as Jerry Colangelo, Charles Barkley, or Randy Johnson. His horses have won three Kentucky Derbies, five Preakness Stakes, two Belmont Stakes and two Kentucky Oaks.
He is the trainer of Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh, who breezed through Saturdays Belmont Stakes to win the jewel of horse racing.

This was the fourth time that Baffert had a horse trying for a Triple Crown.
Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, since then 12 horses had won the first two legs, only to fall in the Belmont Stakes.

Baffert grew up in Nogales and attended Nogales High School. He did his college studies at the University of Arizona, going through the schools very successful Race Track Industry ProgramUnknown

He told the Washington Post this week that his decision to attend college in Tucson was pretty simple “It was either that or (Arizona State) and we don’t like ASU”.

This is a great day for Arizona sports. We can celebrate that one of our own was able to play a big part in capturing the Triple Crown of horse racing.
