Here are some hi-lights from our most recent conversation (July 28th) with the Fantasy Sports Writer’s Association Hall of Famer.
Le’Veon Bell’s suspension was cut from three games to two: how does this impact his value? “I am pushing him past Adrian Peterson and moving him up to number one at running back. He would have been the consensus number one had he not been subject to the suspension. Adrian Peterson is now number two but it’s close. Real close.”
What are your thoughts on Travaris Cadet in New England? “Good deep sleeper in a PPR league. I wrote a column and I did one on wide receivers this week where I take a look at the backfields, the coordinators tendencies. Look at where a player has his strengths or weaknesses and Cadet is definitely the best pass-catching running back in New England…when you look at Shane Vereen who left the Patriots and is now in New York and led that team in backfield touches there are a lot of touches that are going to be available and I wouldn’t be surprised if Cadet caught 40 passes in this offense…remember, the Patriots are not afraid to use guys who don’t have big names.”
Ryan Tannehill or Cam Newton? “Newton. Newton looked really good to me last year and started to run the ball a little more. Now he has an additional receiver in Devin Funchess the rookie out of Michigan. I do like Tannehill. I think he’s going to be a good draft value. I think Newton brings more to the table from an upside perspective because of what he can do with his legs.”
What do you make of the Jets crowded backfield heading into camp? “Could be a mess. Both New York backfields could be a mess. [Chris] Ivory and [Steven] Ridley could be splitting early down work but remember Ridley is coming off of a torn ACL so we don’t know when he’s going to be back, how effective he’s going to be. Then you’ve got Bilal Powell in the mix, too. To be honest with you Ivory is the only draftable member of that Jets’ backfield but remember Chan Gailey is the oc there so he’s going to want to try to throw it there a little more with the duo of Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker and, of course, they drafted Devin Smith too, the speedster out of Ohio State. So, there’s some weapons there. The problem is they really don’t have a quarterback, Brad. I wouldn’t draft Ivory as any more than a four and honestly Ridley would be a five. I don’t even know if he’d be drafted in a 10-team league.”
