The highly sought after head coaching position at Basha High School has officially been filled.

The school announced early Wednesday morning that they have hired long time Assistant Coach, Gerald Todd to run the football program. Todd has been at Basha High since 2006 as a member of the football staff and is also a Social Studies teacher.  Prior to coming to Basha High, Coach Todd served 2 stints at Carlsbad High (NM) as both a teacher and coach (1997-99, 2001-06).  While at Carlsbad High he served as both the Running Backs coach and the Offensive Coordinator.

Todd’s experience stems from the collegiate level as well as he coached at Abilene Christian University in Texas where he served as Running Backs and Secondary Coach from 1989-92 and from 1995-97.  This is experience gave Todd great familiarity of the recruiting process for college football which will be a important tool when coaches come in recruit the athletes out at Basha.

He also played football at Abilene Christian where he was a running back earning  2nd Team All-American Honorable Mention in 1988 as well as garnering All Lone Star Conference Honors as a 2nd team recipient and was named Abilene Christian University MVP in 1988.  Coach Todd was also named to the Abilene Christian University All-Decade team for 1980-89.

We have seen this before with the Chandler School District hiring from within for a football position. Chandler High School did the hiring former assistant Shaun Aguano taking over for Jim Ewan. Gerald Todd and the Basha program will have to hit the ground running as spring practices for all schools in the state are set to begin at the beginning of May
